Territory Availability and the Case for Acting Before Year-End

If you’ve followed this series, you’ve already worked through two of the three questions that matter most before franchise ownership: is this the right fit for you, and does the financial picture actually work. This post is where the series comes together, because there’s a third question that’s easy to overlook until it’s too late to act on: is the territory you want still available.

Territory availability isn’t a sales tactic. It’s a practical constraint of how franchising works, and it’s worth understanding clearly before you decide when to move.

Where Things Stand Right Now

Legato Living currently serves territories across 22 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

That’s a wide footprint, but availability within it isn’t static. As more owners come on board in a given market, the room within that market narrows. We won’t speculate here about which specific markets are close to full, because that changes as conversations move forward, but the pattern holds true across the network: the earlier you start the conversation, the more options you have to choose from.

If you have a specific state or region in mind, the only way to get a real answer is to ask directly. That’s a five-minute conversation, not a commitment.

Why Territory Decisions Tend to Move Faster in Q4

There’s a reason franchise conversations pick up in the last few months of the year, and it isn’t artificial urgency. A few things genuinely converge in Q4.

Investors doing year-end financial planning are already looking at their full picture, what performed, what didn’t, and where they want capital working next year. Franchise ownership decisions naturally surface during that review. At the same time, anyone hoping to have a location open or in progress by a certain point next year has to work backward from that goal, and franchise buildouts take time. Waiting until January to start the conversation means pushing every milestone that follows it back by the same few months.

None of this means you should rush a decision you’re not ready to make. It does mean that if you’re already leaning toward yes, there’s a real cost to letting “I’ll get to it in the new year” become the default.

Franchise vs. Independent: Which Path Gets You There Faster

Part of what makes timing especially relevant here is the difference between franchising and going independent. If you tried to build a residential memory care home entirely on your own, you’d be starting from a blank page: site selection, state licensing, staffing systems, care protocols, and marketing, all built from scratch, with no existing playbook to work from.

A Legato Living franchise means stepping into a system that’s already been built, tested, and refined across our existing network. That doesn’t mean less ownership over your business. It means the parts of the process that are already solved stay solved, and your time goes toward actually running the home instead of reinventing the systems underneath it.

Combined with the real estate and recurring revenue structure covered in our last post, this is part of why franchise owners in this category tend to reach a working, revenue-generating home faster than independent operators attempting the same thing alone.

What Acting Before Year-End Actually Looks Like

To be clear about what we’re suggesting: this isn’t a call to sign anything by December 31. It’s a call to have the territory conversation now, while there’s still room to choose from, rather than finding out in February that the market you wanted has filled.

If you’ve read all three parts of this series, fit, financial readiness, and now territory, you have what you need to make an informed call. The next step is simple: find out what’s actually available in your target market and decide from there.
